IBA celebrated the Strategic Management Forum (SMF) Foundation Day on 21st January 2016 with a half-day workshop on “New Ideas in Strategic Thinking and Management“.
The workshop started with innovation song “Saraswati Vandana” and lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries. Dr. Subhash Sharma, Director – IBA Bangalore welcomed the august gathering and presented his views on “Viswa Model of Strategic Management”. He said that this idea was originated in the mind of Prof. Krishna Kumar and explained the meaning of Viswa as a combination of ‘Vi’deshi and ‘Swa’deshi. According to him this forum is like a network, a virtual organization. There are no assets of its own its members are its assets. He represented the four lions as the four forces at the global level. He also presented his ideas on “Swastik Model of Strategic Management” and connected it with global level forces. He concluded his idea by sharing a poem, “A start from Lota”.
The keynote address was delivered by Mr. S Vishwanthan, Business Advisor – Kentree (Bangalore) and Secretary – IIM-A Alumni Association and the topic of his presentation was “The possible ways ahead for India – Strategic Thinking and Management”.
He explained about various movements that took place in India since 1947 and their consequences and how did they change the phase of India. He expressed his views on how the judiciary can be used as a strategy. He concluded his note by saying we should look India as one and stop dividing it on caste, creed, religion and cultural basis.
Our next honorable guest was Dr. N S Vishwanath, Director – Bhavan’s Management Research Centre and Principal – M P Birla Institute of Management and his topic was “Strategic Approach to Agri-Business in India”. He divided his speech into two parts; the first part was the analysis of the current picture of business without figures and the second part was the issue that will lead to strategic thoughts. He explained his Effort Theory through various crops like tea, coffee, jute etc. and marked how these industries are declining these days. He also explained the issue of packaging, storage, warehousing and transportation. He concluded his idea by saying “Use economics but with a proper value base”.
Dr. Nandesh V Hiremath, Professor – IBA Bangalore gave a presentation on topic “Personal Branding as a strategy for building career”. After him, Prof. Kannadas, Asst. Professor – IBA Bangalore presented on topic “New Strategic Financial Thoughts” and Prof. Narendra Babu, Asst. Professor – IBA Bangalore presented on topic “Strategic for sustainability”.
The workshop ended with vote of thanks presented by Prof. Monika Anand, Asst. Professor – IBA Bangalore.
Career Lessons in Leadership by Mr. Sunit Rikhi, VP & General Manager (Retd.) – Intel Custom Foundry and Founder – Reach for Infinity, LLC
The students of IBA got the opportunity of interacting with Mr. Sunit Rikhi, VP & General Manager (Retd.) – Intel Custom Foundry and Founder – Reach for Infinity, LLC who came down for delivering a session on “Career Lessons in Leadership”.
Mr. Sunit Rikhi is a renowned expert dealing in:
- Management assessment and development
- Leadership in action
- Organizational culture and in-depth exploration of values in action
- Organizational design & development
- Business strategy & execution
- Semiconductor technology & industry ecosystem
Mr. Sunit Rikhi talked about the various changes through which his professional life went and how it materialized into him reaching to his “Ultimate Goal”. He also enlightened students over the philosophy of how “Leadership is not a goal, it is a reward.”

Mr. Santhana Anandraman, Head – Risk & Compliance at GASCO – UAE interacted with the students of IBA on the topic ‘Organization Resilience Through Enterprise Risk Management’.
Mr. Santhana started off the session by asking students a question. What will be their biggest nightmare being the manager of a company? After deliberations, the answer came out to be – A landslide decline in company’s share prices and Manager getting fired! He stressed that a big reason of debacle at work for Managers happens when they fail to link the events and their interdependence. Hence, it is important for Managers to have an Overall Awareness of all the events in their company.
He declared that of all the technical reasons for the ‘The Financial Crisis’ of 2008, ‘Greed’ amongst a few was a major root cause; ethical practices were kept at bay and companies were satisfying their greed. He went on to define ‘Resilience’; which in his words is ‘The ability to come to its original form’. It is like the company facing huge losses but bouncing back to their original position in due time (may be months or years).
He stressed that a good product might be sufficient for starting a business, but it is not enough for business continuity; for this organisations need to have a resilience framework. He also emphasised over the presence of indicator systems and plans which will be implemented during times of crisis; both being important in a company’s resilience.
Towards the end, Mr. Santhana enlightened students over the various aspects of risk, types of risk and the role of a Risk manager in a company. The session came to an end as Mr. Santhana explained how, not just Business activity but Human activity too, has risks associated with it.

Mr. Subrahmanya Gupta Boda, Chief Information Security Officer at GMR Group enlightened the students of IBA with an interactive session on the topic ‘Skills for Digital Age’. Before joining GMR Group, Mr.Subrahmanya worked with Mercedes-Benz R&D from 1996-2010 in various roles in India, Germany and US. He holds a Masters in Engineering from BITS, Pilani and BE from Andhra University.
The session started with Mr. Subrahmanya asking the students a couple of questions about their transferable skills and its importance in the market. He stressed on the importance of Communication skills, Teamwork and Market awareness. He interacted about the latest Technology trends with the students and how the scope of trends like Cloud computing and Digital Marketing.
He advised students to be cautious of additional certifications as initially he feels enhancing working knowledge, being creative and being oneself. He subsequently detailed the reason behind companies investing in IT – ‘Innovation in processes, Ease of Administration and Low productivity error. In his own words “The World is Flat” and it is a matter of debate where the IT services market is heading with new services and product innovations coming to the fore from everywhere with every passing year.
Towards the end Mr. Subrahmanya enlightened students of the various types of services offered by IT companies – ‘Application management, IT consulting, Web hosting, Database management, Cloud based services and many more’. As the session ended Mr. Subrahmanya wished all the students a bright future and blessed them for being patient listeners.
